Agenda/Minutes: 1) Roll Call and Introductions - See attendees above. 2) This Meeting: Our third presentation ... TCP/IP Networking by Mark Drummond was another well attended meeting. There were 16 attendees. As has been evident in previous presentations setting up networking is a matter of about 5 commands in Linux. Explaining the theory (reasons) behind those commands took up most of the time. Mark explained the theory behind TCP/IP networking and how it fits into the OSI model with other network protocols. He then explained the requirements of Linux to set up networking and the basic hardware required. He also described why you may want to do this at home. The basic steps in Linux are: 1) Make the kernel recognize the NIC (by recompiling or loading a module) 2) Configure the interface with the ifconfig command 3) Set up the route. 4) Test or use the interface with an application (ping, telnet, etc.) 5) Make the steps boot automatically with the init scripts. Mark also touched on the home aspect of networking by describing Masquerading and some security issues. He also gave several HowTo references. The demonstration had a bit of trouble as the power went out several times due to a storm. We did finally get Rob and Mark's systems installed and talking and then played a bit with some of the security tools. A couple of machines were brought in to get involved in the networking demo but there were a few problems. Cam's machine (a Red Hat 5.1 installation) refused to recognize his NE2000 ISA clone. Mahmood's machine needed Linux installed but since the power kept going out we decided it wasn't a safe idea to shrink his Win95 partition under these conditions. This will be saved for another meeting. Mark has promised notes from the presentation that can be posted to the web page and any questions/discussion can take place on the mailing list. As usual, Mark also provided some tours of the RMC computer room ... this always has active audience participation If anyone has ideas for future presentations (a suggestion doesn't mean you have to present) then please either post them to the mailing list or send them directly to Mark. 3) Next Meeting: - Linux Kernel Compiling - Wed, Aug. 4 at RMC. 4) Socialize / Adjourn (Set location and agenda for the next meeting.)
