KLUG Meeting Minutes and Agenda (#5)

The fifth meeting of the Kingston Linux User Group was held Wed, Mar. 10, 1999 at 7PM at JR's. 
The meeting lasted until about 10:10 PM.

Meeting Schedule: (Monthly, alternating between first Mon and Wed evenings at 7PM.  Locations to be determined.)
     6 - Wed, Apr. 7 at JR's. (Changed due to Easter weekend.)(See web page for map.)
     7 - Mon, May 3 at JR's.
     8 - Wed, Jun. 2 at JR's.

Summary Of Activities:
   - Advocacy Director volunteer - Mark Drummond
   - Install-fest director   Mark Drummond. (Looking for a replacement?)
   - Ongoing Advertising - ???  (Still looking for a volunteer)
   - Web page host and domain name - Steve investigate, Mark is also checking on RMC hosting.
   - Web Page Administrator and Co-Ordinator - Brigitte
   - Member Database Administration - Andrew Hammond
   - Internet presence - Temporary web page at //signals.rmc.ca/klug.
   - Looking for another RMC rep as Gabriel will be finished this year.

Agenda/Minutes:
1) Roll Call and Introductions - See attendees above.
2) Closed Business:
  - Domain name looks like klug.on.ca.  Mark is looking at registering it.
  - We have now changed to a monthly meeting schedule   the first alternating Mon/Wed of each month. 
3) Old Business:
     - A discussion on accepting commercial support of KLUG activities.  No real conclusions were reached.
     - Member Information Sheets.  (This is remaining a low priority item for now.) 
     - Crest/Logo ideas welcome, Mark has some ideas being developed (Rick Davies at RMC).
     - Web page design ideas welcome; Brigitte has volunteered to administer.  Permanent home still open.
  - Meeting locations   This will be an ongoing issue.  We will meet where convenient for the scheduled events.
     - In general all attendees seemed to favor JR's.
        - At JR's we need someone to sign us in each time   (ie. Rick, Chris or Paul.)
     - Advertising update, we require an updated flyer without the date time of the next meeting.  Web address?
  - Marks CIPS presentation is still onschedule for April (or May).
4) Current Business
     - This meeting mainly covered the scheduled public installfest   set for Sat, June 5, 1999 at Comtech.
  - Due to time constraints, the proposed Queens/RMC installfests will be postponed until fall.
  - Advertising: Outline date, time, location, pre-registration, minimum hardware, and contact information.
  - Registration: Phone interview, hardware checklist, waiver requirements, expectations, etc.
  - Installer Tools: Re-partitioning tools, backup, installation media and method.
  - Installation: Checklist, waiver, basic instruction, password recording, PPP verification.
  - Support: Basic help sheet, FAQ of other URL's, KLUG contact data, copy of checklist, tools CD, etc.
  - Other: Greeter at the door, demo system and instruction, videos, internet security presentation, etc.
  - Proposed that we sell refreshments, etc and use the minimal profit to finance the domain name purchase.
  - Linux commercial packages/documents could be available for purchase also (?).
  - Paul Stemmler will provide waiver examples that we can modify/use.
  - We will look at a dry-run in mid-April (10 or 17).
5) New Business:
  - Mark outlined some of the changes in the new  ezmlm' list manager he is implementing.
  - Mark will look to setup an appointment with Comtech so we can have a look and talk over opportunities.
  - Mark outlined a visit he had to Queens economics department where Debian Linux is used.
     - Ideas for upcoming meetings were discussed; presentations, demos, etc.  Mark made a list of ideas.
  - Due to a couple of new members we re-addressed our expectations of KLUG.
  - Make sure to use the mailing list for any ideas, suggestions, comments, help requests, etc!!!
6) Next Meeting:
  - Rick will bring in a machine so we can do an install   a demo for any new or inexperienced Linux users.
  - Daniel will bring in his Linux PC so we can look at getting his PPP dialer to work.
     - This is if he doesn't succeed with online help.
