I won't explain too much about the presentation as it is documented on the minutes link of the KLUG web page. I started off by covering the following topics: - what is the kernel and the numbering of versions - the difference between kernel and distribution numbering - the actual sequence of commands to compile a kernel - some of the config files that are used - how to boot the new kernel - alternative boot methods in case the new kernel doesn't work Daniel then went through a demonstration of a Debian compile. The compile is highly automated and has version control suitable to generating and managing custom distributions. This appears to be a very powerful tool, especially if there is a requirement to maintain multiple kernel configurations for a variety of machines. Based on the comments and questions during the presentation(s), kernel compiling is another of those Linux operations that is not a cut-and-dried subject but can be a hotly discussed topic. That wrapped up the evening and thanks to Daniel and all who attended and participated. 3) Next Meeting: Tue. Jun 11, 2002 "Introduction To TCP/IP Networking"
