From: Daniel Subject: Minutes of the KLUG for August 8th, 200 August 8th, 2001 Minutes for the KLUG: Roll call: Brigitte brica@wolfhoundweb.com Clayton clayton.c@sympatico.ca Daniel daniel@klug.on.ca Rodney rodney@kingston.net Mike szafranski@canada.com Derek dpaul@adan.kingston.net Mark mark@klug.on.ca The meeting took place at our usual place: The Royal Military College. Thanks to Brigitte and Ross for posting directions pointing to the room. Rodney and Mark brought their computers for the demo. This meeting was about Network II (a.k.a the Wing It Night as we talked about a little bit of everything :-) Unfortunately we did not have a serial cable to complete the installation, therefore we were unable to complete the installation. Thanks Mark Rodney for keeping a happy face despite the fact we could not make use of your boxes. Here are the subjects Mark entertained us about: 1- We started with a definition and demonstration of LILO (Linux Loader). From there, Mark showed us how to get in single mode. 2- From there, we covered the licencing subject of GNU. A description of the various type of licencing, especially the LesserGPL. For more information see: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html 3- After this discussion, Mark also toutch the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act). See: http://www.lib.umich.edu/copyright/dmca.html Good read and mostly US driven 4- Then we we went back to the meat of the meeting. We looked at the commands: dmesg See: http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue59/nazario.html 5- We also looked at the Sendmail configuration on a linux box and how we can internally set up a private domain name. Its like creating your own domain name in a LAN. See: http://www.linuxdoc.org/LDP/solrhe/Securing-Optimizing-Linux-RH-Edition-v1.3/chap22sec173.html Here are the minimum requirements if you wish to create your own DNS at home: - 486 pentium - 16 MB ram - 2 network cards ISA running at 10 Mbps minimum - 1 Gb hard disk space 6- Security Mark also talked about security. More specificaly the topology of PKI. Basically, there are two models of certifications: The web of trust See: http://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual.html OR: http://www.webtechniques.com/archives/1997/11/ and the Hierarchy model. Companies like Verisign, Entrust are models we talked about. Here in Canada, you can "buy" a CA certificate from banks or directly on line with. See: http://www.royalbank.com/newsroom/news2.html (last press release about Entrust) http://www.cibc.com/english/noteworthy/digital_signatures/ and: http://www.entrust.com/authority/index.htm See: http://www.networkcomputing.com/909/909colmoskowitz.html and http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/sectax.htm#t436 What you should be watching for is security whereas the ZONE you create in your mini-intranet has the minimum possible entry to the your smpt configuration. 7- Mike Szafranski suggested that we hold the meetings at the public library to be able to attrack more people. He has been given a "Go ahead" to arrange a meeting overther and he should (or may) follow-up on this. We will find out at our next meeting. 8- Derek Paul and or Mike szafranski also suggested we hold a meeting about "security" 9- Closing: We finished at 10 pm (almost) and everyone was happy.
