Jul 11 at RMC. "Practical Networking (and Demonstration)" 34 - Mon. Aug. 6 at RMC. "More Practical Networking (and Demonstration)" 35 - Wed. Sep. 5 at RMC. "Network Services" Summary Of Activities: - Web page and domain - http://www.klug.on.ca/ - Hosted by Internet Kingston! (Thanks!) - We also have klug.ca registered but it is not yet activated. - Mailing List - http://www.yahoogroups.com/search?query=klug- - You have to register for a free Yahoo account first. - Usenet Group - kingston.os.linux (General, not just KLUG) Agenda/Minutes: 1) Roll Call and Introductions (if required) - See attendees above. 2) This Meeting: There were 9 attendees to our 21st presentation "Introduction To TCP/IP Networking" by Mark Drummond. Mark started out with a review of network protocals which are applicable to many networks including IPX and Banyan Vines. First Mark covered the OSI model which has 7 layers; application, presentation, session, transport, network, data link and physical. He then gave a description and example of each. Next came the TCP/IP Stack with, in this case 4 layers, but some implementations define 3 and 5 as well. The layers are application, transport, internet and physical. Once again a description and example of each was provided. Then Mark outlined a typical connection session between 2 network hosts and how each layer is utilized. Next came a discussion on network addressing where the old/current 32 bit V4 and the new 128 bit V6 were discussed. Also, network classes (A, B, C and D), routing and subnetting were covered in detail. Then Mark started discussing the mechanism behind several of the protocals and services that are listed in the /etc/protocals and /etc/services files in Linux. There was a lot of detail and questions on DNS (name service). Also the discussion strayed into NAT (network address translation) which tended to include port multiplexing, firewall, ipmasq and port forwarding, all those subjects that are of interest to those setting up a home network with a single point of access to the internet via cable, dsl and even dialup. Security concerns came up a few times. We even strayed into gateway and routing protocals including as/bgp and egp. Due to some questions at this meeting and a scheduling problem for Mark please note the following changes to the date and subject of the next 2 meetings. The subject changes are to allow for a practical demonstration of the concepts discussed at this meeting. Originally: 33 - Wed. Jul. 4 at RMC. "Connecting to an Internet ISP (PPP/LAN)" 34 - Mon. Aug. 6 at RMC. "Home Area Network" Changed to: 33 - Wed. Jul 11 at RMC. "Practical Networking (and Demonstration)" 34 - Mon. Aug. 6 at RMC.
