This meeting started out with Mark distributing some draw prizes to attendees. The draws are made from the mailing list subscription membership and you must be present within a couple of meetings of the draw to accept your prize (or pick it up outside the meeting times) or there is another draw for it. The prizes are merchandise that is sent to Mark due to our registration as a Linux Users Group. The draw winners are posted to the mailing list in advance of the actual meeting. There was also some discussion on moving the mailing list from the current home on yahoogroups to klug.on.ca. Mark said he would look into an automatic move of all the currently subscribed members to make it as transparent as possible. He also stated he would put the move to a vote on the mailing list. The reason for this move is that there have been a couple of outages on yahoogroups and moving to the host at Internet Kingston would give KLUG local control. Stay tuned. As for the main presentation I outlined how to compile a generic linux kernel while highlighting any potential problem areas. I especially concentrated on differences in the Mandrake/Redhat RPM update method and alternate ways of booting your system should an unsuccesful compilation attempt leave your machine unaccessible. I tried to highlight some of the problems in compiling a Mandrake kernel (since that is the distribution recommended by KLUG) but all the instructions were intended to be generic and are the same that I follow to compile my Slackware kernel. We didn't actually do a compile due to the time constraints but covered the file layout, package and system access requirements and how to work through the initial configuration steps. Rather than provide a complete overview of the presentation here I will make the handout available as a text and doc file off of the main meetings page of the klug.on.ca home page at http://www.klug.on.ca/~dmitton/minutes/. Thanks to all who attended and participated. 3) Next Meeting: Mon. Jun. 4 at RMC. "Introduction To TCP/IP Networking" by Mark Drummond.
