Mark started out by describing the concept of an Operating System and how Linux evolved from an idea by Linus Torvalds in 1990 at Helsinki University, to its initial release in 1991 to its functional and viable introduction in 1994. This meeting was a slightly different forum than normal as it evolved into more of a round table discussion of what Linux is. Brigitte had brought in a recent "PC Today" magazine (Vol 9 Iss 1) that had an "Introduction to Linux" section in it. Some of the questions were answerable by specific sections in the article. There were discussions on the differences between Linux and MS Windows from several different perspectives including cost, ease of installation, ease of support, market share, application availability, apparent speed and degree of support. Other platforms and operating systems were also included in the comparison as required. Some of the other OS's were Mac, BSD and QNX. We even evolved into some classic platforms (and their influence on Linux) such as PDP11 and game platforms like Apple, Atari and their ilk. The meeting ended early due to inclement weather conditions. Thanks Mark and to all who attended. 3) Next Meeting: Mon. Feb. 5, 7pm at RMC for "Installation HowTo". 4) Socialize / Adjourn
