Mark presented several Perl scripts which demonstrated many different functions. He covered them line by line and explained each function. The example code covered such things as command line arguments, internal variables, parsing external files, processing input data from external pipes, outputting data to pipes and a variety of string manipulations. Shell scripts provide a very quick and local mechanism to perform routine system maintenance and any other repetitive operations. There are several script languages available in most Linux distributions such as bash, sh, python, tcsh, csh, perl, java and tcl to name a few. Another programming option in Linux is compiled languages such as C, C++ or pascal where the program is "compiled" into a binary form prior to execution. Compiled binaries are typically utilized if a program is to be distributed or copyrighted or if execution speed is an issue. Programming languages and their merits (or lack of) are very often a hot discussion topic among programmers and system administrators. Thanks for the presentation Mark and thanks to all who participated. 3) Next Meeting: Mon. Nov. 6 at RMC for our System and Network Security (6 of 12). 4) Socialize / Adjourn
