Mark showed examples of the problems associated with and the security potential of various combinations of file permissions. As a result of questions he also went into some environment variables which effect default permissions and the consequences of changing them. There was also time for an explaination of the Linux boot process and the difference between the "Sys V" method used by Mandrake and Redhat (also others) and the "BSD" method used by Slackware. He also showed some examples of how to edit and control the boot process in the various /etc/rc.d/ scripts. The topics covered in these 2 sessions are in no way limited only to Linux but serve as a primer for many UNIX systems developed and deployed over the last 20+ years.
