Ideas For Future Meetings: - 2000 will be mainly dedicated to networking and network security subjects. - Instructions on how to install Linux distributions. Agenda/Minutes: 1) Roll Call and Introductions (if required) - See attendees above. 2) This Meeting: There were 16 attendees to our 8th presentation, "Installation How-To" by Mark Drummond and Mike Moulton. This is intended to be the first in a series of 12 presentations that will cover Linux topics ranging from installing to securing the system. These will be punctuated by regular "old fashioned" style install fests! The 12 presentations are meant to be instructional in nature and available for rotating presentation to new (and old) attendees. This first subject has been a popular idea for some time. The presentation started out with planning and reading. The Linux Documentation Project at http://linuxdoc.org/ was presented as the prime source of documentation. In general, the installation should progress as follows, these are generic instructions, most distributions will follow this general formula: 1) Planning: - Read the instructions available online and plan your installation. - Know Your Hardware - record all the hardware in your system. Vendor, model, IRQ settings and the like. - Other things, modem (Windows only?), Mouse type, video card. - Know where you are going to install Linux, buy a seperate hard drive or partition an existing one. - How are you going to install; bootable CD, boot floppies, NFS and the like. 2) Installation: - Prepare the Linux partitions ... the simplest scenario is a SWAP and a "/" partition. Use FIPS to make space if required. - Start the installation and answer the preliminary questions; system language, time zone. - Allow the installation to finish. This can take some time depending on the hardware and method. - Answer some additional questions about root password, user account name and password. - The post install steps involve configuring XWindows, networking and a boot method such as LILO. Make the emergency boot disk when prompted. - You will be prompted to reboot the system to activate the new Linux installation. 3) Running Linux: - If all goes well, Linux will boot to a Login prompt where you use the previously supplied ID and password. - At this point you may begin using Linux or install additional packages as required. 4) Problems: - Well, they are rare BUT we have to mention it! :-) - Ask for help on KLUG or the UseNet. Polite, clear and detailed questions tend to get answered. - Read the appropriate How-To's, either online or on the CD that your distribution came on. - Search for past, similar problems on http://www.dejanews.com/usenet/. There was then a demo of a Slackware 7 (text based) installation. This went to the end of the meeting BUT the offer was extended to do the Mandrake installation (GUI based) if any wished to stay. Thanks Mark and Mike for a great presentation. 3) Next Meeting Mon. June 5 at RMC. Intrusion Demo by Rob Postill and Kerry Forbes 4) Socialize / Adjourn
