Chris started out by explaining the different types of DNS servers, namely caching, internet and intranet and the reasons why you may want to implement one, including save internet (and dialup) bandwidth, simple load balancing and a convenient nameing method for a local network. He then showed a simple method to differentiate between the new V8 and the old V4 of BIND. V8 uses a configuration file at /etc/named.conf and V4 uses /etc/named.boot. This depends on the distribution you are using. He then stated that you must have previously installed BIND on your system by whatever tool is supplied ... that would be kpackage or rpm on Mandrake. Chris then went into the details of the contents of the configuration files line by line. The main file being /etc/named.conf and the others in /var/named. I won't try to duplicate the syntax here but if you have any questions just ask on the mailing list. He also stated that there are several examples in the DNS How-To which should be installed as part of your distribution. Then due to some questions he got into some general DNS operation and also touched on free DNS servers such as those provided by dyndns.org and dhs.org. The whois server information from internic.ca, arin.net, ripe.nat and apnic.net were discussed as well. Then, to finish it off (and with some help from Mark) there was a bit of a review from the last presentation about network classes, dotted quad notation, subnetting, netmasks and other associated mechanisms. Thanks for the presentation Chris! Some more news is that we were forced to move to a new room tonight (G133) due to the highest attendance to date. And, last but not least, if you have any ideas or interests for future meetings, please pass them on to Mark or I. Thanks to all who attended. 3) Next Meeting Mon, Apr. 3, 2000 at RMC. Our 3rd mini-install fest! 4) Socialize / Adjourn
