Mark started right at the beginning with why you would want a home network, types of networks (TCP/IP) and the difference between hosts and gateways. He then touched on hardware, including cards (NICs), hubs, cables and coax. He then went into describing the layers of the protocol stack from the lowest (link) layer to the highest (application) layer. Then outlined the software that can run on it (SMB, NETBIOS, NETBUI, etc). Next came some detail on packet contents and the IP address classes and structures. The detail for the entire standard is contained in RFC's which are located at http://www.faqs.org/ should you want more information. In addition Mark distributed a couple of copies of Corel Linux he had received as well as some copies of Mandrake 7.0. In order to get the "free" items from Corel we must post reviews about the distribution on the KLUG web page. Mark requested those who received or tried out copies to please send him reviews that he can use. Also, there were tours of the RMC computing facility for those who were interested. Also, the KLUG web page has been re-structured. Please pass on any comments or problem reports to Mark. And, last but not least, if you have any ideas or interests for future meetings, please pass them on to Mark or I. Thanks to all who attended. 3) Next Meeting Wed, Mar. 3, 2000 at RMC for "Setting up a DNS Server". 4) Socialize / Adjourn
