Subject: [Klug-general] October 13, 2005 Meeting Minutes
Hello Everyone,
Daniel asked me to write some minutes for tonights meeting and post them
to the list, so here they are.
Attendance: 9 people were in attendance at tonight's meeting
Topics:
Daniel gave a talk on computer security, focusing on the security of
laptops and desktop work stations. Specifically he covered:
- firewalls
- encrypted file systems
- crypto-loop
- dm-loop (not sure of exact name)
- loop-aes
- an overview of a select few crypto algorithms
- encrypting files using mcrypt and gpg -c
- a selection of attacks that crypto can fall victim to
- using public/private key systems to encrypt automatic backups
- the sensitive information on swap and /tmp and why to encrypt them
- the persistence of data on a hard disk and why to destroy a hard disk
before discarding it
And then the topic diverged and we discussed the security of the credit
card system, and then online payments in general.
The next meeting was decided to be the second Thursday of November at
8pm. That would be November 10th at 8pm, and likely at Queen's again.
The topic for next meeting is currently to fix the wireless networking
and sound on one member's laptop. It is my understanding that anyone
with hardware setup problems can bring their system next time and we
will try to sort out everyone's issues.
All in all, quite an enjoyable meeting. Thank you to Daniel for giving
your talk, and I hope to see everyone next month.
Adam.
